BIBA 2019 – James Leigh

With BIBA just around the corner, we took the opportunity to interview some of our team of experts to find out more about them;

James Leigh, Business Development Manager

How would you describe your day job?
Challenging and rewarding in equal measure

What is your biggest achievement to date?
Reaching 28 years in the Industry with people still thinking I sort of know what I am doing!

If you could change one thing about the London insurance market, what would it be?
I wouldn’t change anything – it’s the best market in the world.

The theme for this year’s BIBA is ‘leading the way’, who do you think is leading the way in the market at the moment?
I may be biased, but I really believe the MGA space is leading the way at the moment and represents a real evolution in the world of Insurance. MGAs are building mechanisms which create increased choice for consumers through access to new and often exclusive capacity. The MGA model is proving to increase capacity in the market as it allows providers a resilient pathway to entering new marketplaces and distribution channels without the expense of increased operating costs. When you pair this with the excellent work being undertaken by Peter Staddon and his team at the MGAA, where they are working tirelessly to improve professional standards within MGAs, there is an exciting future ahead.

It’s Ensurance’s first BIBA as an exhibitor, what has been your most memorable first?
I appreciate that it’s traditional to refer to the birth of a first born at this point however, that would detract from the importance of my second born so instead, I am going to keep it business orientated! My most memorable moment has to be when we secured our first order at Ensurance, on the day we went live with our DUA. After months spent in dark rooms and the odd pub, debating and building the model from the ground up, this was the moment when it became real! Since that first policy, we continued to see excellent levels of growth across all our products and I am humbled by the level of support we have received from all our broker partners and of course, our Capacity partners.

BIBA always attracts a great panel of speakers, if you could pick any keynote speaker for the event, who would it be?
I am sure there are many honourable members of the Insurance world I am overlooking, however, for me hailing from the red part of Manchester, I would be delighted to see Sir Alex Ferguson take the stand. I would love to hear how he took a relatively toxic club to the pinnacle of the football world and managed to keep them there so long. His insights into man management would, I am sure, be valuable to all of us in the business of Insurance.
